Training New Players

Training new players well is essential to the continued survival of NOTD Aftermath.

Due to the significant amount of mechanics and dynamics in the game, new players often find themselves confused and lost during their first few games of NOTD Aftermath. They tend to be undisciplined and impatient. Often, they feel disappointed when they realize there is little immediate satisfaction offered.

This guide is designed for veterans who want to learn more about training new players, and new players alike.

Where do I go?
The most basic skill to teach new players is survival. When the game starts, new players should be made aware that their Marines do not respawn. New players need to know where to go, so direct them to town. Teach them to sprint using the Z-T keys.

What do I do?
After reaching town, new players will ask you what the game is about and what they have to do. Tell them to familiarize themselves with all their abilities and hotkeys, and to read and understand everything in the Mission(Quest) menu. They can remain relatively safely in town while more experienced Marines fan out across the sector in search of equipment. Privates who obey your instructions and listen carefully will get through this phase successfully.

How do I find items?
With their anxiety lowered, new players will next ask about acquiring/buying items in the game. Explain to them that items are randomly scattered around the map and reconnaisance is required to find them. No items are sold in NOTD Aftermath. They should be made aware of the uses of the three most essential equipment - ammunition, medical kits and fibrin bandages. The Marine's primary weapon only fires as long as there are sufficient rounds and magazines. Medical kits are used for general healing while fibrin bandages are reserved for curing open wounds and emergencies.

I understand the basics of survival. What do we do now?
At this point of time, everyone should be back at town and you should brief them on the subsequent convoy security mission. They should be taught to stay within the firing range of another Marine at all times, and stay in front of the convoy for better cover. Most creeps tend to accumulate and attack from behind the convoy's trail.

Everyone is dead. Game over?
New players must be informed of the save/load rank Experience system present in NOTD Aftermath. The 12 character save system allows players to transfer their Experience and medal records across to future games. Higher ranks grant access to new classes and alter Marine traits (lower Hit Points, better damage and movement speed). New players should be encouraged to play 3-4 games in a row to build up and strengthen basic gameplay skills.

Most importantly, new players should be directed to our website and read TacNet articles as well as our forums. There is a wide range of literature on our forums and on TacNet regarding game strategy and mechanics that will interest new recruits and veterans alike.
