Introduction to Pro Mono My name is Yukie and I'm here to teach y'all newbie Designated Marksmen (MM) the fearsome art of using the Monofilament Cartridge. First off most people become rather apprehensive when someone whom they haven't yet made acquaintances with picks the Designated Marksman. This fear is entirely justified cos MM's are TKing bastards. It's true. By the time you have mastered the techniques this guide has to offer you will have TK'd a whole bunch of shit. It's okay because it happens to everyone, and you will have to learn from your mistakes (I hope). This guide assumes that the MM will be playing an "Army style" (ahem "Yukie style") game as opposed to a "dirty friggin' worthless noobhill camping" game. If you plan to play a noobhill (and all of its aforementioned decriptors) game then stop reading this guide, uninstall Warcraft 3, burn your computer, and kill yourself. Do it now. Pro mono is only for Army style games. But what is Pro Mono? Good question. Pro mono is just what I call the proper, venturesome, and incredibly destructive use of monofilament cartridges. A good MM with pro mono can take the team to the very last waves even if it's just him and a machine gunner. The Basics Before you can even begin to learn pro mono in a game, you must first tell your fire team leader to type -tc 7. Being pink is critical to the pro mono learning process. Now, when starting off as a level 1 MM, you'll want to put your first point into mono. I prefer this method because I typically play smaller games, where scope*** isn't very necessary. Now, you will want to trade points with crit and mono with mono priority until both are leveled to 5. This is the way of pro mono. Your fire team must be alerted to your pro mono abilities and you will typically want to take the rear position in the group. This is so you can mono everything behind and also to spot for anyone who is venturing into the trees to 'con some items. However being in the lead allows you to mono dogs and nasty things that come from up front. A true pro mono user will be able to take both lead and rear positions and be able to switch between the two without hesitation. You must be aware of your team's position at all times and the possibility of a teammate running in the spaces you can not see. It is important not to fire mono when you know there are teammates ahead or behind of you not in vision. You will need to ask for pings a whole lot. Most importantly, always use the buddy system. Since we're pro mono users, our best friend is the bennelli or sometimes (if we're lucky) his cousin the browning. When your mono is on CD (cooldown) you will have to use the shotgun. The shotgun technique is almost the same in application anyway. Its always good to pack smoke grenades too, cos smoke grenades are the total shiznit. If you can get away with it, try to whore the Energy Cell and Justice. Also try to loot energy from the Engineer when he isn't looking. Or you can just ask. Whatever. The Specifics Level 1-3 mono is about the same width as Nerubian Assassin's (DOTA hurr hurr) impale. At level 4 the width thickens a little bit (250/250/250/300/300), and the range does as well (800/900/1000/1100/1200). To give a more realistic idea of the length, the range of mono at level 5 is about the same as a bennelli shotgun. The most important thing to remember about monoing is that you must always click on a spot on the ground to fire your mono. Do not target enemies directly because it will ruin the precise trajectories needed for pro mono. Get in the habit of clicking on the ground and judging the line by instinct as you will need it to save lives and your own fragile little self on several occasions. The Strategy Mono will deal monstrous damage to everything in its path. Since it travels in a straight line, the only way to maximize mono efficiency is to line up your enemies. This is easily done by simply running in the opposite direction (as shown below). The faster enemies come up in the front and the slower ones bunch up in the back in a very nice, very neat little line. This is your chance to strike. Note that often you will have to do some luring to line up the baddies. • Image : Oh no, fats! • Image : GG fats. Pro Mono Strategy If there's a teammate in the way, you will have to move to the side and judge the line from a side angle. This is an essential technique of pro mono. • Image : Saving Pvt. Pipedream This technique of judging the line while in the middle of the group is essential in very hectic situations. The trick is you dont want to mono the bad guy's directly-- instead you want to judge the line that will just barely hit all of the creatures but be far out of the way of your teammates. Here's me monoing Etaphreven several times during the convoy mission: • Image : Oh no, Etaphreven! • Image : Eta Pro Monoed • Image : Eta Owned • Image : GG Etaphreven You will also have to use mono on many bosses/large creeps to hold them in place in order to save your teammates. You will need to line this mono up perfectly to avoid killing those who you wanted to save. Note that you should also use this technique to delay bosses while your friends are escaping. • Image : Moirae Spotted • Image : Moirae Owned • Image : Moirae Killed When camping, you should make a mental note of where and how the enemies are approaching. Pick the perfect spot to mono enemies as they come. Using smoke grenades to your advantage can maximize your killing efficiency. • Image : Owning the Entrance Soloing bosses is awesome when you have pro mono. During Wave 8 you should be praying for Hades and hoping that he drags you. Cos then you can mono his dumbass twice and kill him before he can get away. • Image : Silly Hades Note that after you defeat Hades, you should prove how hardcore you are by killing yourself... cos you're so hardcore at mono that you don't even care about living. Also, remember to say GG (good game) to Hades (and any boss you kill) after you 1eve1 him. This is important. Quoting something from "I'm the juggernaut, bitch!" is not only incredibly awesome, but highly recommended (and often mandatory). • Google Video : I'm the Juggernaut Primary Pro Mono Targets • Those critter dogs that Az put all around the map for no reason. Mono those things to hell, and be sure to be smoking cigarettes while doing it. • packs of enemy dogs, especially devourers. And ESPECIALLY Etaphreven. • Large bosses *ahem* fats. • Unknown parasites and crepitus. 'Cos those guys are total bastards. • Hades, Moirae, Minos, Lyganesh, etc etc but careful with Prometheus. Since its model is so large, sometimes squad members are under its body and out of your vision. • Super zombies (those zombies that look normal but have 4000+ Hit Points. You can tell it's a super zombie if you critical strike it and it doesn't die. When Not To Mono (or atleast when to give it a second thought) • Wave 8 on Moirae because there are tons of civillians following you and they're hard to see in NVG (night vision goggles). • Wave 7 cos there are lots of civvies around, you will have to judge it with the utmost precision. • When you're not sure if there's a teammate or civillian in the range of monoing. • When you accidently press the hotkey E instead of T, thinking E was scope. (this is for those who are used to the scope-whoring NOTD2 MM) • When CE (combat engineer) is planting a thermal det (or perhaps using pro det: -prime 3) and monoing will screw up his sync with the primer time • When NPC (non-playable character) Delta's are trying to blow somebody up. • When everyone is running around kind of hectically because there are gunships or the cloud is approaching. • When your teammates's pets are cannibalizing something you just shot at. • If someone says something along the lines of "disperse" whenever there's a boss, tell them to keep quiet. Separating the group while under heavy fire is extremely hazardous to every now-vulnerable marine and the dispersion severely limits your ability to pro mono the boss. Prior to beating the game and achieving the ending it is customary to TK your teammates after the game tells you to -save. Use your pro mono skills to the fullest. Remember to save before you kill all of them, though. *** But wait, why don't you use scope? I don't really even bother to level scope until the end when I don't have any more skills to put points in to. Scope isn't that great; it just takes away mana you should be using for pro mono. Besides, with MM its better to run and press S to stop then it is to attack move, because pressing stop will immediately attack the highest level threat, and these threats are typically very close. |
