Anyone know what kind of tactics military forces would use? Where or when they'd execute them? Do weapons matter in tactics, and how much do they matter?

Thinking of more questions, i'd like to quench my thirst for this topic. Have mostly no clue what it consists of. =/

I only know tactics from some military forces such as the S.A.S. and the U.S.M.C. the Marines travel in 4 man fire teams in order from left to right in a formation: Pointman: eyes and ears of the team wherever he goes his team follows, Team Lead: commands the fire team what he says is law in a fire team, SAW Gunner/Support Gunner: uses a heavy weapon such as the M249 SAW or any type of LMG that the U.S. Marines use,and finally Assist: there are 3 different types of assists: Medic, Combat Engineer, and DM/Designated Marksman, the medic is self explanatory, while the combat engineer or as you would know him in NotD as Assualtman carries the big boom weapons, and the DM will normally use a rifle modified with a ACOG sight of some sorts rarely uses a sniper that is called a Sniper not a DM. I'll talk about formations later.

Christ, could give you a 100 pages of info about military strategical tactics of formations, movements, weaponry etc. All based on my personal experience in the forces. Still serving, still learning.

But basically, most countries have their own methods and tactics - usually mixed up together from various "handbooks" or teachings. Also, depending on your company or platoon, your squads amount of men might vary. For example, here in Finland, basic jaeger squads have 2+6, which includes 2 non-commissioned officers and 6 pfc's/jaegers. Then again, military police squads have 2+4 including 2 non-commissioned officers and only 4 pfcs'/jaegers.

How about weaponry then? In my 2+4 squad, we tend to use long-range rifles, shotguns, assault rifles and pistols. Assault rifles and pistols are every soldiers basic weapons but depending on the mission, some may be given a shotgun or a sniper for tactical advantage. Urban warfare usually requires atleast 1 shotgun in a squad for closequarters combat.

Yeh, weaponry sounds good. I've scrounged around for info. on tactics, and i've got the basic idea of what it consists of. Don't get me wrong, I still am clueless, but an inkling of knowledge is better than nothing. Weapons are always a good place to start. :)

Are you talking about things like breaching, bounding overwatch and the like?

Mm, I guess so. Things like why a Captain would give certain orders, why would having artillery support at here not there change the flow of battle, etc. Most of it is probably common sense; if you see the bulk of their force going around one way, barrage them and send a small group the other way and get them from behind, or whatever they'd do.
